Discovering a little-known fruit

Let us introduce you to producer from Quebec who contributes to our local flavors offered during our cruises: the Maison de la Chicoutai.

The Maison de la Chicoutai

La Maison de la Chicoutai is located in the North Shore region, in the village of Rivière-au-Tonnerre. It is part of Quebec's flavors circuit. It is located 125 kilometres away from Sept-Îles while it is 120 kilometres away from Havre-Saint-Pierre. Make sure to discover this village considered as one of the prettiest in the region. By the end of July, you can taste the fresh bay. From May to October, you can also fill up on delicious products made with this rare fruit, including jams, jellies, herbal teas, coulis and vinaigrettes, directly at the Maison, located in the heart of the village.

The chicoutai berry looks like a raspberry, with its beautiful orange color, but could not be more different in taste, being less sweet and more sour, close to the mango or the apricot's flavors. It is cultivated in northern countries with a subarctic climate, in peat bogs, muddy forests and swamps, making it difficult to pick which is why we appreciate its rarity and luxury even more.

The chicoutai berry is not only delicious but has significant nutritional properties. It is rich in vitamin C and has anti-oxydant properties.

During your visit to Rivière-au-Tonnerre, admire the St. Lawrence River and its wildlife, including whales, in all their splendor, with its proximity to dense beaches and sandy coves. There, you can also enjoy a picnic on the village boardwalk along the river.

Make sure to promote your local producers.
